Today, being connected means having access to education, jobs, and vital resources. It means having a voice. Yet, there are still communities out there that don’t have this privilege.
Did you know that according to the World Bank, a 10% increase in broadband penetration can result in over a 1.3% increase in economic growth in developing countries? That’s no small change! And yet, as per the UN, as of 2021, about half of the world’s population still doesn’t have access to the Internet. That’s billions of people missing out on the opportunities that being connected provides.
Access to the Internet in vulnerable communities can revolutionize education, opening the doors to online learning resources, MOOCs, and global knowledge exchange. It can catalyze healthcare, offering telemedicine services and real-time health monitoring. It can boost local economies, enabling e-commerce and digital entrepreneurship. It fosters inclusivity and equity, giving everyone a platform to voice their opinions and connect with the wider world.
That’s where we at Wayru come in! We’re on a mission to bring the Internet to every corner of the globe, starting with our own backyard here in Quito, Ecuador. Our work focuses on building robust, decentralized networks using proven technologies like fiber, wireless mesh, unlicensed spectrum, and blockchain to provide reliable and affordable Internet access to underserved communities.
